The BMW Motorsports thermostat is designed to open at 55*/131*F to allow the engine to run much cooler under racing conditions. This allows heat to dissipate from the engine bay sooner preventing "heat soak" and allowing the engine to run at its peak and without the stress of high under hood heat through a full day at the track.
Please note that this thermostat is usable in a street car, and even recommended if you do a lot of spirited driving and live in a warmer climate. Its lower operating temperature does result in weaker heating output for the passenger compartment, and therefore is not recommended for vehicles driven in cold weather.
